Description

Wetting and Dispersing Additive

SURFADIOLS 163

(Alternative to Disperbyk-163)

SURFADIOLS 163 is wetting and dispersing additive for solvent-borne coatings and pigment concentrates. Stabilizes pigments of all types. Broad compatibility for all-purpose solvent-borne pigment concentrates on the basis of aldehyde and acrylate grinding resins.

The additive deflocculates pigments and stabilizes them by means of steric hindrance. It provides equal electrical charge to the pigment particles. The resulting repulsion and the steric stabilization prevent a possible co-flocculation, which leads to flood and float-free color in pigment mixtures. The deflocculating properties of the additive increase gloss, color strength, transparency, and hiding power and reduce the viscosity of the millbase.

Incorporation and Processing Instructions

For optimum performance, the additive must be incorporated into the millbase before addition of pigments. The resin and solvent components of the millbase are pre-mixed and then the additive is slowly incorporated while stirring continuously. Do not add the pigments until the additive has been fully distributed. Post-addition (to repair faulty batches) is possible as long as the product is added slowly and under high shear forces.

High pigment carbon black, acetylene carbon black and high-grade organic dyes need to be pre-soaked. SURFADIOLS 163 can be dissolved in the treatment solution, then added with pigment, stirred at high speed for 30-40 minutes, placed for 12 hours, and ground to the required fineness.

Recommended Levels

Amount of additive (as supplied) based upon pigment:

Inorganic pigments: 15-20%

Titanium dioxide: 4-5%

Organic pigments: 30-60%

Carbon blacks: 80-100%

The above recommended levels can be used for orientation. Optimal levels are determined through a series of laboratory tests.

Package and storage

The standard package is 25kg plastic/iron drums, 18 drums per pallet.

Keep containers tightly closed in a dry, cool, and well-ventilated place. Keep away from heat and fire sources. Separation or turbidity may occur at temperatures below 0 °C. Warm to 20 °C and mix well.

When stored in an original unopened packaging, the product has a shelf life of 24 months from the date of manufacture.
